Areas of expertise by WAAPO on climate change and environmental protection
WAAPO has been secured a four-year climate change program; as member of the newly selected DANIDA Project – NAGAASHO consortium “Integrated Solutions for Preventing Displacement & Strengthening Rural Resilience in Somalia and Somaliland” with Care international, Safer-world, WFP and iris-hup. The program will be focused climate & environmental resilience, livelihoods, Inclusive economic opportunities, and conflict prevention, social resilience & Inclusive governance.
WAAPO is currently working with UNICEF on a three-year (multi- year) active P.D programme that covers Children on the Move project which funds the operation of three safe houses and seven CP-desks. The UPSHIFT project, which provides business skills and a life skills programme to 250 youth, as well as start-up funding to 300 youth, and a community-care project for drought-affected communities in Sool and Sanaag regions, aim to protect women and girls from abuse and exploitation through community-based protection.


With the support of UNICEF& UNHCR, WAAPO has been implemented an integrated emergence response project with the aim of responding to drought-affected communities and climate change in eastern Somaliland regions. The integrated project comprises WASH (provision of essential WASH facilities & supplies, hygiene promotion & sensitization) and Cash-based intervention (CBIs) for almost (400 HHs) livelihood program through start-up business support (120 Start-ups and seed funds) and health components (running 4-health facilities in Buuhudle district). The program was also covered the SBC program through – strengthening community-based protection, and build local trust in the affected areas.
WAAPO is launching a one-year livelihood and youth innovation program funded by UNICEF. This initiative is aimed at empowering vulnerable youth through social innovation and livelihood development. One of the key components are focusing on climate change mitigation and adaptation for youth in order to integrates climate action into youth empowerment by fostering green economic opportunities and innovation. Key initiative are incl. supporting youth-led green businesses start-ups, green economy workshops, hackathon challenges and business innovation related to green economy, and set-up youth-led green champions.
WAAPO has successfully implemented the Integrated emergency responses project, encompassing the “BLF Elinina and DEC” with the Action aid Somaliland and DRC in the Togdheer and Sool region. The program was consist of food security( 500 HHs), WASH, Livelihood and CBIs and small-scale agricultural support package to address the needs of drought-affected communities and climate concerns. The overall aim is to enhance risk reduction, recovery, and improve community resilience for those impacted by prolonged drought and climate changes. This was achieved through a range of interventions incl. water distribution (400HHs), Food for cash (500 HHs); CBIs ( 390hhS); agricultural training and provision of tools (650 HHs); livestock restocking ( 300 HHs) soil bund construction, and rainwater harvesting support for ( 400HHs) Additionally, the project focuses on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) workshop & early working system to strengthen coping mechanisms among local authorities and prevent soil erosion.


We have launched a four-year nutrition & livelihood for women project funded by the Finnish embassy via Mart-Finland to address women in economic and climate issue. The project will provide nutritional skills, business start-up for economic empowerment. WAAPO is implementing provision of protection Program for asylum seekers, refugees and IDPs project intends to strengthen the protection services for women & girls. Furthermore, WAAPO is implementing two projects with UNFPA & UNTF that contribute to women’s rights, gender equality, and GBV in SL regions for a period of 3-year. Furthermore, this year, WAAPO has been secured Anchor – TGG grants Cohort-2 for 2-year project period funded by option-U.K and health in emergence program in Buhudle ( UNICEF Fund)
WAAPO (UN- HACT Qualified) WAAPO was assessed in 2023 and received a low-risk rating. UNICEF & UNFPA was audited by WAAPO in 2023; a two-year audit exercise commissioned Bakertilly and 5- year, Micro-assessment exercise commissioned by Deloitte & Touche LLP which was resulted in an ‘unmodified’ rating with a high level of satisfaction.
On January 2023, UNHCR conducted an audit on WAAPO through Deloitte & Touche LLP. The audit opinion was concluded as ‘unmodified’ -low risk. Over the last two years, WAAPO was audited two spot checks (Bakertilly in 2021 and PWC in 2022); which shown a satisfactory report in all material respects, in accordance with the HACT procedure. 2023, UNICEF was also conducted PSEA assessment to WAAPO and rated low risks
